Epson VS240 comes with a very attractive design. Its housing is finished with white and black accents, paired with rounded corners and a compact, lightweight body. Behind the lens, you can find the focus wheel. There is no optical zoom, which is to be expected from an SVGA projector. There is also a slider for the horizontal keystone correction, which will allow you to correct the projection geometry if the unit is placed at an angle.
Epson VS250 is similar that it is also quite portable. It is about the same size as its sibling, Epson VS240, so it can also get into any spare space in your bag without much of a problem. However, the design is slightly different; the housing is dominated by a white finish.
Again, there is no optical zoom. However, Epson VS250 has an automatic vertical keystone correction. It can tilt the projection up or down automatically according to the height of its adjustable foot. Epson VS240 vs VS250 are 3LCD projectors. Compared to DLP projectors, 3LCD models typically offer brighter and more accurate colors. Epson VS240 has a native SVGA resolution (800 x 600) with a 4:3 aspect ratio. It has a brightness power of 3000 lumens, which should be good to perform in a room with some ambient light.
Despite having an affordable price tag, Epson VS240 is already equipped with a decent range of connectivity options. On the back, you can find an HDMI input, a VGA input which doubles as a component video input, a USB Type-B port which supports plug-and-play, a USB Type-A port for plugging a flash drive or WiFi adapter, and a series of RCA composite audio/video jacks.
Epson VS250 also has a native SVGA resolution. However, it has been given the chance to boast a more powerful lamp. It has a higher brightness power, 3200 Lumens, which is beneficial if you want to make presentations in well-lit office rooms.
The connectivity section is similar. There is an HDMI input, a VGA input, a USB Type-B port for computes, a USB Type-A port for dongles, and RCA composite audio/video jacks. You should be able to connect this projector to most modern platforms nowadays.
On either model, the on-board buttons are all accessible from the top panel. Epson VS240 is able to throw a 55-inch image from a distance of about 8 feet. The projection has bright, solid colors. There is also decent crispness which allows text to be displayed properly. White-on-black text as well as black-on-white text have good readability at font sizes 9pt and up.
Colors are generally bright and accurate. However, there are some cases where the color balance is not perfect. Scenes with gray backgrounds tend to suffer from a slight red or green tinge. The issue remains true regardless of the color mode that you use.
The projector may also experience slight pixel jitters when running on a VGA connection. This issue can be eliminated by adjusting the Sync setting. On the good side, this issue does not come up at all when the projector is running on an HDMI connection.
Epson VS250 is quite similar in most of its capabilities. It can also project a 55-inch image from a throw distance of roughly 8 feet. Since this projector has the same native resolution, the overall performance is unsurprisingly similar. It can display text with decent crispness.
Unfortunately, this also means that Epson VS250 does suffer from the same issues as well. Sometimes, images come out with a mild red or green tinge. The projector may also have pixel jitters when receiving input from the VGA port.
Really, the only thing that makes Epson VS250 better than Epson VS240 is the increased brightness power. The difference is not dramatic, but it is there. When projecting in a well-lit meeting room, the projection is more visible and more readable.
If you want a projector that can last for a long time with minimal operational cost, check the lamp life rating. The part that will require regular replacement is the lamp. 3LCD projectors are typically able to produce brighter images than DLP models, but their lamps also degrade more quickly.
Fortunately, Epson VS240 and Epson VS250 have been optimized to allow cost-efficient performance. On either projector, the expected lamp life is 5,000 hours in the Normal mode. But you can keep your projector running in the Eco mode to extend the lamp life to a maximum of 10,000 hours. This is quite considerably long.
But, then again, the replacement lamps for these Epson projectors are cheap. So, operational cost won’t be an issue in the long run.
Sound and Fan Noise
Each model here is armed with a 2W mono speaker. Obviously, this is not really powerful. It is not much better than your phone’s internal speaker. It can be quite handy for a business presentation, but it is certainly not for playing music or movies.
Note that neither of these projectors has an audio output. As the effect, if you want to use an external speaker, you have to plug it directly to your computer’s audio jack.
The fan noise of Epson VS240 and Epson VS250 are relatively low. According to the specifications, the fan noise is 37dB when in Normal mode, 29dB when in Eco mode. Again, this is not the best choice for home entertainment, but the fan noise won’t be an offending matter for office use.
Epson VS240 and Epson VS250 runs on a custom software that is simple and intuitive to navigate. You can access any option easily through the remote control. You can customize some image settings such as brightness, luminosity, and contrast.
There are several presets to choose from, including a “Cinema Mode” preset which surprisingly works. In Cinema Mode, the projection comes out with enhanced contrast, making the color quality almost comparable to that of a dedicated home entertainment projector. Almost, but not quite. Still good if you want to watch some movie in your office’s break hours.
